This week we reflect on Boshoff Grobler’s presentation at the FLOW conference 2023, where the central theme was “An Epic Adventure.”
Grobler drew a meaningful distinction between two types of adventures, both transformative, but with distinct outcomes:
1. Critical Adventure: Steering the trajectory of one’s life.
2. Epic Adventure: Impacting people to the extent that it transforms the surrounding world.
💡 Grobler delved into the intricacies of God’s new engagement model, emphasising two pivotal characteristics: Collaboration and Contribution.
Referencing Ecclesiastes 4:7-12 (CSB), he highlighted the biblical application of this model.
The passage focuses on the futility of solitary pursuits and underscores the strength found in collaboration and contribution:
7 Again, I saw futility under the sun: 8 There is a person without a companion, without even a son or brother, and though there is no end to all his struggles, his eyes are still not content with riches. “Who am I struggling for,” he asks, “and depriving myself of good things?” This too is futile and a miserable task.
9 Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their efforts. 10 For if either falls, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to lift him up. 12 A cord of three strands is not easily broken.
🎯 The aim is the generous giving of oneself, fostering social cohesion by constructing shared values and communities of interpretation. This altruistic commitment goes beyond personal gains, aiming to contribute meaningfully to the Kingdom of God.
Romans 12:1-2 is invoked to highlight the call to self-sacrifice, as a living sacrifice to God, leading to personal transformation. This call follows the trajectory of mind renewal, progressing from a carnal state to faith flowing in the direction of the future God has envisioned.
The concept of the “redemptive edge” is introduced, spanning from comfort (cash flow) to caution (Insurance) and concern (Fences), to criticism (Critical).
This redemptive edge represents a fight against darkness, leaving the comfort behind and stepping into an “epic adventure”.
✅ The link to wealth is established by emphasising the ultimate goal of aligning with God’s heart rather than pursuing wealth for its own sake.
It calls for readiness and availability to answer God’s call toward addressing significant needs.
We are encouraged to unlearn the worldly ways of understanding wealth and instead align with God’s perspective.
The overarching message is clear: prioritize God’s call and contribution over worldly pursuits.
