From Financial Stewarship to Sonship

This week we’ll delve into Emil Raubenheimer’s talk during the FLOW conference 2023.

He compellingly advocated for a radical transformation in our approach to money.

He emphasised the transition from just managing money (Stewardship) to a deep, personal connection with God (Sonship) and how to build wealth.

Here’s a breakdown of 9 life-changing, transformational, characteristics Emil taught on building wealth:

1. Two distinct views:

Raubenheimer compared God’s Kingdom and economy of abundance with the world’s economy, which is lack and scarcity.

2. Business Wisdom:

He highlighted that a great business adds value, and the consequence thereof will be wealth, rather than focusing on making money as the main objective.

3. Kingdom Principles:

God is the real builder, seeking hearts over money.
Decisions should align with God’s guidance.
What informs our decision?
Who do we listen to before we make a decision?

4. Spiritual Battle:

Ephesians 6 warns that our true fight is spiritual, not with people.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

5. Relationship Over Religion:

Emil emphasised God values relationships and not religious activities.

6. Money as a Map:

Money is a map that represents value, but it is not the actual value. Just as the map of the world is not the world itself.

7. Psalm 1 – Like a well-rooted tree, meditating on and delighting God’s wisdom brings prosperity in all seasons:

Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.

8. Trust and Faith:

Trust is the soil in which faith is cultivated

Proverbs 3:5-6 says: Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

9. Sonship in Finance:

We are to move from religious routines and activities in managing money to a personal, growing relationship with God and obeying his voice on how to manage our wealth.
